Lord, What Should I Do?

By on April 16, 2015

And David inquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.  1 Samuel 30:8

It took Three days For David and his followers to get back home.  They were ready to see their wives, their children, get a home cooked meal, get some rest but instead what did they see?  Their city burned and destroyed, families missing and cattle gone.  The Amalekites had come while they were away and completely eradicated the city.  All eyes were on David.  All fingers were pointing to David.  “This is all His fault”, “If we had not been out helping David, we could have been here for our families”, “Our babies, Our wives, where are they?”,  “All that I worked for, all that I built is gone…Because of David”  Kill him! Stone Him!

If you were David, what would you have done?  Quickly leave the scene? Justify your actions? Tell them “You chose to come, I didn’t make you come.” David was affected by what had happened just as much as the other men.  His two wives had been taken captive as well.  But these scriptures shows David’s confidence in God.  He knew the people were blaming him, he knew they were plotting to kill him, he knew of the possibility of the Amalekites harming his family, he was fully aware of the situation that he was in.  However he did not let his situation cause him to forget his God and take the matter into his own hands.  Instead his situation drove him to seek God for direction.  David had been in battles before and was successful in them.  He could have been cocky and said “boys don’t worry about it, I got this”.  No, David did not let his past success cause him to think he could win this battle also, on his own.  Before making a move, David Ask God “Should I pursue?”  What was David saying? God I don’t care how successful I was in the past, I’m not going to make a move unless you move with me.   He was asking God, What should I do?  It did not matter to David how big or how mighty the Amalekites were, nor did it matter how many weapons they had.   David’s actions were going to be based upon what God instructed him to do.  He did not start stressing out nor freaking out.  He trusted God’s word.  He knew if God said I am with you, then God was with Him.  He knew that God would not speak unless he was going to perform it, He knew that God was faithful, all-powerful and would deliver just as he said he would.  It did not matter to him that his followers, were talking about stoning him.  David only needed to know two things from the Lord: Should I pursue and will I overtake?

You have to get to that place where you shut out what people are saying, shut out what’s going on around you, even shut out the things that you see.  You have to go to the throne of God knowing that for the next few minutes or hours that you are there, it’s just you and God.  Your God that hears, your God that delivers, your God that holds the plans in his hands and you can inquire anything that you want to of him.  David wanted to know-Lord, What should I do?  He wanted direction and guidance that only God could give.  He moved fear out of the way, he told doubt good-bye, he allowed no wrong motives in,  He knew it was just him and God.  It was God that had the answer to his problem, It was God who could show him how to get his family back, it was God who could show him how to recover all.  He trusted God and because of this, he recovered all.

Sooner or later there will come a time in each of our lives where we will be faced with situations that only God can fix.  Whatever it may be, God said to give all your worries and cares to Him, for he cares about you, 1 peter 5:7.  Don’t let fear, stress, doubt or anything else stop you from seeking God for guidance and more importantly do not let it stop you from waiting on God for an answer.  David and the other men, actually had people and things they loved taken away, it wasn’t a threat or something that might happen later on, it actually happened.  But David did not count it as over with nor considered it as hopeless.  He turned to his God and trusted him to see him through.

Heavenly Father,  I pray for all of those who are faced with situations that they do not know what to do.  God you hold the answer.  You know how to fix it.  You know how to solve it.  I pray God that you would strengthen their hearts to turn to you.  Strengthen them to seek you and strengthen them to wait on you.  God show them the way, lead them, guide them, and direct them.  Help them Father.  All that they lost, bless them to recover all.  Show them your power and your greatness.  In Jesus name, I pray amen!
