Would God Let A Person Who was Morally Good Go To Hell?

By on August 6, 2014

How many times have you heard someone at a funeral say “He was a good man, I know he is in heaven now”.  Or, maybe something like, “She did so much to help people out, she is in a better place now.”  If that person never made Jesus Christ their Lord and Savior, will their morally good deeds, still get them into heaven?  Many people seem to think so but is that what the bible say?

I don’t think anyone wants to think that their loved one is in hell and will be there forever, especially if that person had a really good or sweet heart towards reaching out to people.  It brings us comfort to think that they are now resting in the arms of the Lord, no more pain, no more tears, no more sorrow and we will one day see them again.  But the truth is, the only way to make it into heaven is through Jesus.  Good works alone do not qualify us to live with God.  Ephesians 2:8 states “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God”.  So what can we take from this?  It is our faith in Jesus that serves as our ticket into heaven.  It does not matter how nice you are or how much you have helped people out, if you do not have the ticket to get in, which is your faith in Jesus, you can not make it in.

True faith in Jesus, means that you have by faith accepted Christ into your heart and that you are now a doer of his word-You do what he tells you.  You believe his word, his laws, his statues, his commandment to be true and you abide by them.  If you fall and mess up, you ask for forgiveness from your heart and keep moving.  Why? because this is what his word tells you to do.  God does not want you to sit there and wallow in pity because you messed up.  He said in his word that if you repent from the heart that he will forgive you and remove it from you.  Psalm 103:12 “As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.  You are a doer of the word of God because you accept him as your loving father and believe that you are is his child.  You have taken on the identity of Christ and have left the ways of your old sinful life.

It is not God’s will for any of us to go to hell, however he does not and will not force his will upon us.  For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life, John 3:16.  Jesus wants you to accept him because you love him and need him, not because you have been programmed to follow him.  This is why he gives us a choice. “But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD. Joshua 24:15″

If you have not given your heart to Jesus I would encourage you to search the scriptures, in them you will find that God loves you and does not want you to perish.   “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance, 2 Peter 3:9″  Today if you would invite him into your heart, he would accept your invitation.  He will become your God and you will become his child. We all have to leave this world one day, and it is only our faith in Jesus that will take us from this world to living with God.

From my heart to yours, I ask that you please share this message. I know there is someone out there who needs to read it.  Thanks in advance!

    Hi Denise
Thank you for liking and following my blog!
You are right about eternal life and salvation. The scriptures declare ‘For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God’ Ro3:23, & ‘For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord’ Ro6:23. Then Ro10:9,10 state ‘That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation’, and ‘For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved’ Ro10:13.

    God bless you & yours,

I love this. It was helpful to me because it seems like a fair question. At first I thought wow it’s true, they should be spared. But your post made me realise that living without acknowledging God, who made EVERYTHING good, eliminates their good deeds. How can one live and enjoy the goodness God made without acknowledging him?
    Thanks for your post 🙂

Without whipped cream on that tart, this Grandma is doomed.

If she is not a follower of Jesus Christ, then yes she is doomed. There is only one way, one Lord and that is Jesus. You are entitled to believe what you want but that does not change the fact that Jesus is the only way.

Or that the character Jesus of Nazareth is merely a narrative construct, Denise.

If that is what you choose to believe, then that’s what you believe. I will not waste my time debating you on this, however I will pray for you that God will make his truth known to you. I get better results when I pray than I do debating.

            Good for you.
I have no qualms what you, as an adult, believe. Truly.
You run an open blog so I presumed you were looking for open dialogue.
You ventured onto God Cranium’s blog.
This is what freedom and respect is all about.
As long as you extend that respect to others, especially children, and allow them to make their own informed decision when they are of an age to exercise critical thought, then no problems, and no issues with me whatsoever.

The fascinating thing about this kind of faith, is that it assumes a “God of Love” would take the time to construct an exquisite place of neverending torture for billions of human beings (including, it seems, this kindly looking grandma), merely because they did not worship Him. Ouch. As I’ve often said, if believers in this kind of God have a place they go when they die, well, I’m certainly “thankful” I’m not going there.

God created hell for Satan and his followers. It’s not works (being nice and sweet) that gets us into heaven, it’s accepting Jesus as your lord and savior that gets you in. If you don’t want to except that fact, you have the right not to. However your opinion does not decrease the power or love of God in any type of way. His word and authority still stand and you will one day see him face to face. You may laugh at it now, but believe me, you won’t be laughing when you stand before him. He loves you, but he leaves it up to you to choose who you are going to follow.
      God bless,

God tells us in his word that we will be persecuted when we stand up for him, so I’m not worried about getting flacked. The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me? psalm 118:6

Hello there! I’m an atheist, and I read your post. I had a question about the point you are making. Based on your point of view here, is God more interested in getting people to love Him or making them lead lives in accordance with His Will?

God is our heavenly father, just like a biological father and mother wants their children to love them, so does God. If a biological mother and father are good parents they will guide and instruct the child with making life choices. What would be your thoughts on a father who knew there was disaster down the road, but did not warn their child about it? Wouldn’t you question their love for the child. How can that parent just watch and let their child go astray when they know what is waiting. People say that God is trying to control our lives as if we are puppets on a string, but he is not. He is simply warning us because he knows what destruction lies ahead and he warns us because he loves us. Even those who talk against him or say he isn’t real, God still tries to get there attention, he still tries to warn them because he does not want to see them perish. However soon as destruction hit-death, crime, disease, sickness some people will blame God. Say if he was real these things would not have happened. God word tells us that these thing are going to happen-no if’s, and’s or buts about it. He warn us that we are in a world where evil abides. However he also tells us this is not our final destination, and that regardless of what we see or hear to remain faithful to him. I don’t know how your relationship with your parents was, but I know as a child, if my mother or father told me that they were coming for me. I believed their word. If some of my friends tried to make me believe that they were not coming, I did not believe them because I knew my parents were faithful to their word and so is God. One other thing. there are some people who never look at the fact that there is also A Devil and the bible say he comes to kill, steal and destroy. This is why God tries to instruct us how to live so that we won’t fall prey to the Devil. However, the Devil has blinded some people and make them focus on all of the destruction that is going on and he will trick them into thinking, with all of this happening there can not be a God. God wants our love and he wants your obedience, he’s not trying to control you. He’s trying to spare you. This is why he want people to live their lives according to his will-because he knows what lies ahead.
