Desiring God means we want to experience the fullness of God in all his glory, might and power. It boils down to the desire for a true, genuine relationship with God. We have counted the cost to following him, realizing that we may lose all. However, there is still a cry in our Spirit that cries out just as it did with Paul when he said “That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; Philippians 3:10. Nothing can quench this thirst for knowing more of God. Nothing else can even compare to it.
Desiring God will cause us to want to know more about him. As we read God’s word the Holy Spirit will begin to give us revelation. He will show us clearly who God is, what God will do and what God is requiring of his people. He will begin to show us the characteristics of God and the authority and power that belongs to him.
Our confidence in God will grow. We will find the boldness we need to speak up for Christ because we know who he is. The Wisdom, knowledge, and understanding that we need, all comes from God and the more time we spend in the word the stronger our desire to live Holy becomes because we will desire to be like him. Increasing in knowledge is one of the first things that fuel our Spiritual growth in Christ and cause us to desire God even more.
After we have come to the knowledge of truth to who God is and what God will do, our next step to fuel our spiritual growth is to obey God’s word. If we are truly desiring God it can only be because we love him. And, if we love him we will keep his word. John 14:15 says “If you love me, keep my commands. Throughout the bible we find scriptures where we find the word telling us to obey God. 2 John 1:6 “And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands.” Luke 11:28 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” 1 Peter 1:14 “As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.” If we truly want to fuel our Spiritual life then we will be obedient to the word of God.
Desiring God will cause us to be patient and to trust God in difficult and challenging times. Why? Because we have full confidence in God’s ability and his willingness to perform his word in the lives of his people. We know that God said he will supply all of our needs Philippians 4:19. We know that God said He will never leave us nor forsake us Deuteronomy 31:6. In Jeremiah 33:3 we know that God said when we call upon him that he would answer us and show us things that we did not know. We know that God’s word is true, so the last step that we must do to fuel our spiritual growth is to practice being patient and trusting God even when we do not feel his presence or see immediate change taking place.
Spiritual growth comes from Desiring more of God and Desiring more of God causes increase spiritual growth. When we put knowledge, obedience, patience, and trust to work in our lives we will experience growth not only in our spiritual lives but in every area of our lives. This is because God is a God who blesses his people when they put him first, Matthew 6:33. It is God’s will that we seek him. It is his will that we desire more of him, a stronger relationship with him. And, the word of God lets us know that when we do seek him we will find him. Let nothing stop you from desiring God.
You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13
