This was the question asked by a young woman, who said she did not believe in God. As I thought upon the question, the thought of how a husband and wife plans for their expectant child came to me. They are well aware of the corruption, crime, disease and hatred in the world that the child will one day face. Yet, they still desire a child who they can love and build a relationship with. Before the child is even born, they start making plans for the baby. Some will go out and open up a savings account for their expected child, why?-because the plan is to be able to meet the child’s every need. Some will start reading how-to books, because the plan is to take care of the child and to raise the child up in a proper way. There are some couples, who will go ahead and assign God-parents, because the plan is to make sure the child is well looked after, at all times. Before the child was ever conceived they had a plan, and that plan was based upon love and relationship. The same it is with God, in Jeremiah 1:5 God told Jeremiah “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Before Jeremiah was even conceived, God made plans for him. Not only did God have plans, but he also had a purpose for Jeremiah. “I appointed you as a prophet to the nations”. No one else could carry out Jeremiah’s purpose, because God assigned it and designed it just for Jeremiah.
It wasn’t that Jeremiah was so special or anything like that. Just like God had a plan and purpose for Jeremiah, so He does with each of us. Even during the beginning of time we see how God had a plan and a purpose for Adam and Eve. His purpose, we find in Genesis 1:26-28 “Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” As we continue in the passage we see that God also had made plans to supply their every need. Genesis 1:29-30, then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground–everything that has the breath of life in it–I give every green plant for food”: And it was so.” God did not just bring them here and leave them. He had a purpose and plan in mind, when He created them.
The couple that makes the wonderful plans of having a baby, knows that there is the chance that the child will grow up to rebel, start doing crimes or drugs, or go completely astray from the parent’s teaching. Yet they still choose to bring the child in the world because of the relationship they are desiring. The same with God, He tells us everything in His word for our life. He tells us the roads to travel and not to travel, He tells us the consequences of sin, He tells us how to stay in His will. He tells us, because He loves us and desires relationship and fellowship with His children. However, it is up to us to follow or go astray. Not only did He create us with a plan and purpose in mind, but He also created us to carry on the works of Jesus. God does not make you, nor force you, nor tell you that you better continue these works, but rather He asks you and He lets you choose whether you will do it or not. He does need you, however, Him needing you does not make Him dependent upon you nor does it diminishes His sovereignty. So the answer to the young lady’s question is this: He needs you, to tell the lost about Jesus. He needs you, to pray and lay hands on the sick. He needs you, to help the poor. He needs you, to reach out to they dying. He needs you, to comfort the hurting. He needs you, to preach the Gospel. He needs you, to encourage the saints the are weary and tired. there are so many things that He needs you for. If only there was a willing heart to say “yes lord, you can use me.”
